Welcome to another edition of Jack’s Stack! A weekly review/recommendation for new comics right here on Enthuse! Let’s jump into it:
Writer: Tom King
Pencils: Jason Fabok
This week we finally get some advancement on what the iconic Watchmen smiley button is doing in the DC universe. Every issue of King’s run has been chock-full of exciting action, and this issue is no different. Without spoiling anything, the Alan Moore-esque narrative device and page layouts employed in this issue are on point.
Cave Carson has a Cybernetic Eye #7
DC’s Young Animal
Writer: Jon Rivera
(Additional Story Credits: Gerard Way)
Pencils: Michael Avon Oeming
All of Young Animal’s output thus far has been stellar. This issue of Cave Carson not only promises the usual hyper-cerebral superheroics, but also a flashback to a classic team-up between the Cave Crew and the Big Blue Boy Scout! And let’s not forget those hilarious Bane colouring pages!
The Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign? #1
Writer/Artist: Geof Darrow
The true successor to Preacher, this new ongoing features the titular Shoalin Cowboy in gorgeous and graphic cultural satire of the current political landscape (with the addition of kung fu excitement). Darrow puts an insane amount of detail in his figures and backgrounds. For the uninitiated, the villain is a talking crab, so new readers may want to check out the previous volumes.
Literally Every Jeff Lemire Book that Came Out this Week:
Moon Knight #13 (Marvel Comics) with Greg Smallwood
Black Hammer #8 (Dark Horse) with Dean Ormston
Royal City #2 (Image Comics)
Seriously, this guy is on fire. Despite a rather unfortunate tenure on IvX (seriously, its trash), Lemire has been killing it in all of his recent titles. With schizophrenic-fantasy weirdness in Moon Knight, superhero introspection in Black Hammer, and gritty-realistic drama in Royal City; Lemire is one of the most varied creators in the industry. While we’re at it, let’s just go ahead and recommend last week’s Old Man Logan #21, also written by Lemire (with pencils by Eric Nguyen).
Killing it, I tell you!
And there you have it folks, this week’s newest recommendations. Go out and pick these up at your local comic shop or on Comixology.com! Happy Reading!
